Kathleen, I agree with you wholeheartedly. A big part of why I even wrote the article was to challenge myself (and others) to look beyond one-size-fits-all answers, and to question things we take for granted. All of our interactions with others should be driven by love and respect.

There are instances in which it could be argued that Christ did act offensively. Both times He overturned the money-changers’ tables in the temple, for example. That was certainly not a polite, socially-acceptable way of dealing with them. Nor were His verbal dealings with the Pharisees at times. What I appreciate about those instances, though, is that He was dealing with people in a position of spiritual leadership who were absolutely abusing their power in His name.

Great questions! One’s that many of us have and do ask ourselves. As to your statement that the cross of Christ MUST offend, I would challenge that. The scripture you referenced tells us that it ‘will’ offend some people. And the ‘why’ in your question of ‘So why am I so scared to offend others?”, is the critical word. I would hope that your reason for not wanting to offend someone is because you treasure them and your relationship with them, just as God does his with us. That is a GOOD thing. If people take offense at our sharing of the Gospel with them it should never be because it was done in offensive manner. Christ didn’t do that and neither did his apostles.

Our view of imitating Christ must not be myopic. When Paul was arrested in Jerusalem he did not just accept the false charges against him, he appealed them to the highest court. There are no one size fits all answers. Paul went to Jerusalem led by the Spirit and left in chains, still being led by the Spirit. We still need that same personal daily leading today.

Just wanted to tell you, that I went on my missions trip to Paraguay May 2007.
